Learn How to Manage Back Pain From
an Orthopaedic Specialist
Back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide and a leading cause of disability in both industrialized and developing nations. It can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, regardless of occupation or activity level. Whether it presents as a brief ache after physical exertion or a long term, persistent condition, back pain can have a profound impact on an individual’s quality of life, mobility, and mental well being.
Causes of Back Pain
Back pain has many potential causes, which may be mechanical, structural, systemic, or psychological in nature. These causes can be broadly categorized into the following groups:
Mechanical and Musculoskeletal Causes
Structural and Anatomical Abnormalities
Inflammatory and Autoimmune Conditions
Infections and Tumours
Referred Pain
Lifestyle and Psychosocial Factors
These are the most common causes and typically involve issues with muscles, ligaments, and joints.
Muscle or Ligament Strain:
Often due to lifting heavy objects improperly, sudden movements, or poor posture. This type of injury can cause acute back pain.
Degenerative Disc Disease:
Age-related wear and tear on the intervertebral discs can cause stiffness and chronic pain.
Scoliosis: An abnormal curvature of the spine, which can lead to uneven pressure distribution and chronic pain.
Kyphosis and Lordosis: Other spinal deformities that can cause discomfort and limit mobility.
Vertebral Fractures: Common in individuals with osteoporosis or those who have sustained traumatic injury.
Ankylosing Spondylitis: A form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing inflammation, pain, and eventual fusion of vertebrae.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Though more common in the hands and knees, it can affect the spine, causing inflammation and pain.
Spinal Infections (e.g., osteomyelitis): These can cause localized back pain, fever, and swelling.
Tumours: Cancerous or benign growths in or near the spine may compress nerves or damage vertebrae.
Sometimes, back pain originates from problems elsewhere in the body:
Kidney Stones or Infections
Gynaecological Conditions
Pancreatic or Gallbladder Disease
Poor Posture and Sedentary Lifestyle: Contribute to muscle imbalances and spinal stress.
Obesity: Increases strain on the spine and supporting structures.
Stress and Depression: Can exacerbate the perception of pain and lead to muscle tension.
